Horses have been part of the human world for many centuries and are loved by many people. They have adapted to many environments and roles, and also inspire art like these bronze horse sculptures www.gillparker.com/bronze-horse-sculptures-limited-edition-to-buy  as well as literature, like the famous Black Beauty.

Horses have helped to build Britain throughout the industrial revolution, assisted farmers by moving heavy farm machinery, and more recently, they are an important part of therapy for people who suffer from a range of illnesses.

In addition to this, many people enjoy spending time with and riding horses, and whether you enjoy a trot around the countryside or you are a top racing jockey, you will know the pleasure of spending time with horses.

There are many breeds of horse, some which occurred naturally and others that have been selectively bred in order to perform certain roles. Here are a few of the most popular breeds…

Horse Breed Used for Racing – The Thoroughbred is the breed that you will most commonly find on the racetrack. Thoroughbred horses are descended from Arabian horses which were imported into the UK during the 1600s and 1700s and were then bred with the native horses of Britain which were larger and heavier to create the early thoroughbred racehorses.

Racehorses are then separated into jump racehorses and flat racehorses, with some better suited to sprinting and others that are built for long distances.

Horse Breeds for Children – There are also a number of horses that are perfectly suited to younger riders. Smaller horses such as the hardy Shetland pony, Welsh pony and Appaloosas all have a smaller size as well as a good temperament for working with young children and helping them to build up their confidence with horses and with riding.

Strong Horses for Heavy Work – Before we had machinery, many of the heavier jobs were done by horses, and this is why in the UK the Shire horses were bred for their size and strength. From towing the barges on the canals to pulling farm machinery, Shire horses are strong, resilient and patient, with even temperaments which are perfect for these jobs.

Although we are not in need of horses to do these jobs anymore, they are still well loved and bred around the UK.
