Popular Things that People Collect

Fancy a share?

Collecting is a fascinating hobby to have and once you have been bitten by the collectors bug you are likely to be hooked! There are lots of various things that people enjoy collecting, but here are a few of the most popular…

Stamps – The most popular thing to collect in the world is stamps. Collecting stamps is an incredibly interesting hobby, as you can find out about important moments in history, and parts of a countries culture through stamp collecting. New stamps are often introduced, and collectors who spend many years collecting stamps, some are incredibly rare, and they will end up with a fascinating record of many events throughout the years.

Coins – Coins and currencies are another popular thing to collect. Like stamps, they are small and easy to store, as well as having a lot of historical interest. Many old coins are incredibly valuable, as well as limited edition coins that are more recent – if you find an old coin, speak to a professional such as the coin dealers UK based GM coins who will be able to give you more information about it.

Cars – A lot bigger than coins and stamps so you will need a lot of room to collect cars! Most people will have one or two classic cars that they spend a lot of time restoring to it’s best, and classic car enthusiasts often get together at meet ups where they have a lot more space t talk about their cars and admire other people’s car collections.

The more unusual side of collecting

Stamps and coins may be the classic choices, but some collectors take the hobby in far stranger directions. Manfred S Rothstein has gathered 675 back scratchers from 71 different countries. Carol Vaughan has more than 5,000 bars of soap, some in novelty shapes and designs but many of them perfectly ordinary bars.

Rob Hull has 571 Daleks, including some full-sized ones. He saw them as a teenager and was hooked. At the strangest end of the scale, one collection of toenail clippings was gathered for a medical research project, which at least gives it a purpose.

What these collectors share with any stamp enthusiast is the satisfaction of knowing a subject inside out. A collection of any kind can grow until it needs a lot of space, and some people end up renting storage just to keep it all safe.
