Why Does Hair Go Grey?

Fancy a share?

So, why does the hair go grey? This is a question that bothers many of us! There are several reasons that can cause grey hair to appear, including age (it usually starts at around age 40 but can start in your 20s), illness, exposure to the sun (especially for those who don’t wear hats to cover their heads), malnutrition, and hormone imbalances. If you once thought that only older people had grey hair, unfortunately this is not always the case. If you have a full head of grey before you turn thirty, you may need to see a doctor for a medical check-up.

As mentioned above, one of the main reasons why grey hair appears is due to a lack of melanin. If you have plenty of melanin in your hair, your hair won’t go grey so quickly. Grey hair is often associated with the pigment cells inside the hair follicles dying off. When the levels of pigment cells decrease, there will not be the same level of melanin as there once was. This results in the strand of hair becoming more transparent and giving off a grey or white appearance.
