Native Trees to Plant in your Garden

Fancy a share?

Trees are one of the most important parts of the earth and as well as producing precious oxygen they are a home and food source for many species of wildlife. They provide shade in the summer months and in the autumn light up with fiery colour before dropping their leaves. If you want a beautiful tree in your garden, it is a good idea to do plenty of research first, and perhaps speak with a professional like Geoffrey Urch Tree Surgeon Gloucester to get an idea of how to care for it.

Native trees are particularly good to have in the garden, as they are used to the weather and therefore don’t require as much maintenance or as much special attention to thrive. Here are a few native trees that make great additions to the garden…

Rowan – This tree, also known as the mountain ash due its pinnate leaves that are similar to the ash and its love of growing in higher places, is a beautiful garden tree. In the late summer and early autumn it will produce clusters of red berries, which will also attract many hungry birds to your garden, such as the blackbird and thrush.

Blackthorn – This tree is great in a garden for many reasons – its beautiful spring blossoms will be loved by bees and butterflies, and it is among the first to flower. The fruits, known as sloes can be harvested for making sloe gin too, which is a lovely warming winter drink.

Holly – This evergreen tree looks good all year round. Adding some festive beauty to your garden in the winter, plant it near the edge of your garden and its spiky leaves will also deter intruders from trying to get in.
